What are LED Puck Lights?

Energy Efficient Hardwired Under Cabinet Lighting

When shopping for under cabinet and accent lighting, there are several products that should be considered. Traditionally the job of under cabinet lighting was done by big, bulky fixtures with fluorescent or halogen bulbs that created excessive noise or heat. Today, though, there are great LED options that offer bright, efficient light with a low profile. One of the best options are LED puck lights, and no one has a better selection of puck lights than Armacost Lighting.

LED Puck Light Installation Methods

When selecting a puck light, an important consideration is how it will be installed. There are two primary installation methods, surface mount or recessed mount.

Surface Mount Puck Lights

Surface mount puck lights will mount on a surface with their entire body exposed, with typically only a small hole drilled to allow wiring to reach the light.

Recessed Puck Lights

Recessed mounting offers the sleekest appearance, with the light housing hidden within the mounting surface, but it does require a larger hole to be drilled and also requires the mounting surface to be able to accommodate the height of the puck.

Armacost offers both recessed and surface mount options, and several of our puck lights like the EdgeVue Under Cabinet LED Puck Light and the PureVue Under Cabinet LED Puck Light can be used with either installation method.

Hardwired Puck Lights Beam Angle Considerations

Where LED strip light provides a consistent linear light that works great for some applications, other times a more focused beam angle is desired. Armacost carries puck lights with a range of beam angles from 20 degrees to 150 degrees, allowing for some of the pucks to act as spot lights, while others offer a wide light dispersion than even exceeds LED strip lights. For example, Armacost Lighting’s Swivel Recessed Under Cabinet LED Puck Light offers a 30 degree beam angle, perfect for highlighting artwork or a fireplace mantel. On the other end of the spectrum, our Wafer Thin LED Puck Light features an ultra-wide 150 degree beam, making it great undercabinet where the goal is to cast light across a wide area of countertop. Always a customer favorite, our Purevue line has a beam angle of 120 degrees making it great for almost any application.

How do you install LED puck lights?

Planning ahead about how to wire your hardwire puck lights will help make the installation quick and easy. Read our LED Puck Light Wiring Tips article for more information.

A few additional tips when considering a lighting project:

  • Much like LED strip lighting, Armacost Lighting’s LED puck lights require a low voltage power source, either 12V or 24V. Armacost Lighting has a full assortment of power supplies for any puck light installation

  • Consider if the application requires a dimmable puck light, and if so, whether an AC or DC dimmer is preferred

  • For a seamless look, try to match the color temperature of the puck lights with other light sources in the room. Armacost Lighting carries multiple temperatures for most puck lights, with options from 2700K up to 5000K

LED Puck Light Brightness

Finally, always consider the lumens, or brightness, needed from a LED puck light. For task-related applications like under cabinet, consider using a puck light with greater lumens output like Armacost Lighting’s PureVue White Under Cabinet LED Puck Light, which offers 375 lumens. For accent lighting where brightness is not needed, our White Mini Indoor Outdoor Recessed LED Light may be more appropriate at 80 lumens.

No matter what the project is, Armacost Lighting has a Puck Light in our assortment that will help put it in the best light. If you need help selecting the right puck light for your project, please reach out to our Customer Service team for more information.
